Charles Rennie Mackintosh, the foremost exponent of the Glasgow School, influenced the entire field of applied arts at the turn of the century. Now for the first time a selection of drawings from Mackintosh's personal sketchbooks is made available. The architect's habit of methodically recording anything of interest to him on his travels made the books into an endless source of inspiration. Though the sketchbooks served a number of purposes, such as experimentation with composition and as a record of private thoughts and reactions, they were essentially working books constantly referred to in the drawing office. As such the many delicate architectural drawings and tinted flower studies not only show a constant evolution in style but also reveal the basis of many of Mackintosh's architectural schemes and decorative motifs.
