William S. Rice's elegant yet humble block prints faithfully portray the landscape in all seasons. An avid outdoorsman, Rice found enduring inspiration in nature—from a pair of peonies to a snow-covered cabin in the woods. In 1900 the Pennsylvania native set out across the continent to California. The state's forests, mountains, and coastline became his primary subjects, but wherever he went—the Southwest, Alaska, or Europe—he photographed, sketched, and painted landscapes and seascapes. Later in his studio, some of those images became the basis of his block prints. Reproductions of twelve Rice prints are included in this calendar.
