The traditional seventeen-syllable haiku always contains an evocative reference to a season and a distinct pause or interruption. Presented here are twelve haiku rendered in Japanese calligraphy, Romaji transliteration, and English translation. Each is paired with a shin hanga woodcut. With their depth and delicacy, wide range of subtle hues, and time-honored focus on beauties, landscapes, birds, and flowers, such prints have long been treasured in both East and West. The prints reproduced in this calendar are in the extensive collections of the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria.
