The original of this brocade is one of the two precious pieces presented to the Imperial Household and kept in Shosoin Repository since the 8th century. In the original textile the flower design with twin birds is skillfully inwoven in stripes of several different colours and shows the exquisite art and taste of weavers in the Tenpyo Era (A.D. 645-781)
This brocade is a copy of the above mentioned, though there is a little change in colour in order to make the harmony of each shade more effective, with an addition of delicate gold and silver thread. The weave-construction of this is a kind of Warp Brocade which was started in the Han Dynasty in China and descended to Japan.
