Twenty assorted 5 x 7 in. blank notecards (5 each of 4 designs) with envelopes in a decorative box.

Printed on recycled paper.

Although he would become best known for his color woodcuts, Walter J. Phillips (1884–1963) was already an acclaimed watercolorist by the time he immigrated to Canada in 1913. Travels around his adopted homeland provided both inspiration and subject matter, and his watercolors reflect his sensitivity to the environment.

Phillips was born in England, where he trained as an artist and supported himself with commercial work during his early twenties before beginning his long career as a teacher. In 1940 he was invited to become a resident artist at the Banff School of Fine Arts (now the Banff Centre). He taught there for more than twenty years and was significant to the development of its visual arts program. The Banff Centre’s Walter Phillips Gallery, which showcases contemporary art, opened in 1976 and is named in his honor.

The four watercolors presented in this notecard set are in the collection of Glenbow Museum, Calgary, Alberta.

Contains 5 each of the following images:
Castle Mountain, 1949
Mount Rundle, 1945
Blue Douglas Fir, Banff, 1952
Mount Stephen, n.d.
