David and Mary Gamble commissioned their winter home from the architectural firm of Greene & Greene in 1908. The Arts & Crafts style house contains design elements influenced by nature. The wild rose is a design motif taken from the Gamble family crest and was reinterpreted by the Greenes on stained glass wall sconces. Mary Gamble was fond of roses and kept a journal of the rose varieties growing in the gardens of the family's homes.
