By Rossana Bossaglia
The last years of the nineteenth century saw the birth of an important new decorative style. Sometimes called Arts and Crafts or Jugendstil, this style is best known as Art Nouveau, after the name of the shop opened in 1895 by Siegfried Bing. Art Nouveau was a dazzling reaction against the indifferent imitation of former styles that had characterized so much earlier nineteenth-century interior decoration. It attracted the most imaginative and skillful craftsmen in Europe, and some of their finest pieces are illustrated in this fascinating book. The reign of Art Nouveau was a brief as it was brilliant - but its influence has been felt in practically every manifestation of the decorative arts throughout the twentieth century.
