Circled by majestic peaks and as blue as a topaz, this freshwater lake’s color is created by Tahoe’s clarity and depth. Straddling the border between California and Nevada, Lake Tahoe is the largest alpine lake in North America. Believed to be formed during the ice age, the lake stretches out 12 by 22 miles. With a depth of 1,645 feet, Tahoe is the second deepest lake in the United States. Mark Twain remarked “it must surely be the fairest picture the whole earth affords.”
