The adorable menagerie represented in this box of notecards evokes a selection of Japanese netsuke in The Met collection. Netsuke, small sculpted toggles used to attach pouches or cases for items such as tobacco and medicine to kimono sashes, were carefully crafted by highly skilled artisans, and commonly depicted real and fantastical animals alike.
