Kokeshi are handmade wooden dolls that originate from the Tōhoku region of north-eastern Japan and which emerged at the end of the Edo period (1603-1868 CE). They often lack of arms or legs, have a few thin, painted lines to define the face and the body often has floral and/or ring designs painted and covered with a layer of wax. While Kokeshi are mostly used as children's toys, they are also symbols of hopes for bountiful harvests, wishes for good luck and fortune, and great appreciation for craftsmanship and culture.
