Snowfall Double-Sided Puzzle

In an era of rapid industrial and urban development in Japan, Kawase Hasui was famous for prints of serene landscapes and small villages. His influential images emphasized the beauty of Japan’s rural countryside through the illumination of land and water by sun- and moonlight and the changing seasons. But it was his snow scenes—from softly falling snowflakes to brisk flurries—that earned him a reputation as the “Artist of Snow.” The 1953 print Snow at Zojoji Temple was commissioned from Hasui and his printmaking partners by the Japanese gov- ernment to recognize as an Intangible Cultural Treasure, and shortly before his death, Hasui himself was named a Living National Treasure. One of the greatest artists of the shin hanga movement, Hasui produced over 600 woodblock prints during his 40-year career.
