What is Tatami?
Tatami are soft mats typically made of woven straw, used as a floor covering in a Japanese home.
About the Artist:
Born in Ota-ku, Tokyo, Hiroyuki Tanaka has been involved in the tatami industry since 2011 and has worked on various projects including the restoration of the Meiji Jingu Shrine and the Gokokuji Gekkouden, an important cultural property. In addition to tatami installation, he is also involved in activities to expand the possibilities of tatami, such as creating tatami artwork for DIESEL's Shibuya store, producing tatami tote bags, and proposing new tatami spaces using computer graphics. In 2023, he participated in Motoyama tatami shop's project and performed tatami installation on site in LA and Boston.
